Wind Turbines

Trained & certified service/maintenance on a wide range of residential or commercial wind turbines, up to 100kW.

Properly designed, located, and installed, wind turbines can be a perfect clean energy choice.

SAGE Energy prefers to support Canadian-made products wherever possible. We also support a number of manufacturers from the U.S. whose models meet our stringent criteria, in particular those products designed to withstand our coastal maritime climate.

For brand-specific information, please check our Links page for some manufacturer websites. If you’re having trouble finding the information you’re looking for, please let us know and we’ll be glad to help.

We offer popular maintenance programs for all of our clients. Availability is subject to the make and manufacturer of your equipment.

Some of the wind turbine generators we’ve installed or serviced include those made by AOC, Bergey, Endurance, Eoltec Scirocco, Northern Power, Raum, ReDriven, Skystream, and Westwind.

Regulation and controls

Wind energy also presents some challenges. Wind turbines do create noise (as almost any machine with moving parts will do) and may not be appropriate for all locations. To ensure wind projects are properly developed and managed, sound levels and other issues are the subject of regulation by a number of authorities.

Return on Investment
For small wind turbines less than 100kW, it can be very difficult to justify the financial return on investment for the average consumer. There are several factors involved, such as the increasing economic feasibility of solar PV, maintenance considerations, the volatility of some small wind turbine manufacturers, and technology challenges within the products.

50kW and larger wind turbines (such as those eligible for the provincial ComFIT program which was discontinued in 2015) are a different story. In those applications, well designed wind turbines that are properly installed can produce great economic returns. There are wind turbines that are intelligently designed by reputable manufacturers that have endured over time.

The purpose of this website is not to provide a ton of information about the renewable energy industry, as there are numerous excellent websites that do that (check our Links page for more information). If you have a specific question or project in mind, please contact us directly.

Wind Turbine Services

SAGE Energy has been involved with installation or service of wind turbines by several manufacturers in the watt, kilowatt (kW) and megawatt (MW) sizes.

  • Certified wind service technicians
  • Services for units up to 100kW.

How much will it cost to install a wind turbine?

This is a simple-sounding question with a wishy-washy answer: it depends. A wind turbine can be perfectly suitable, depending on the application (off-grid or grid-tie), and of course, the available wind resource. Equally important: the product chosen and how it is installed.

Can I install a wind turbine AND solar energy?

Yes. A wind turbine/solar energy system is called a “hybrid” system.

However, will we recommend it for a grid-tied system? Probably not (see below).

Can I install a wind turbine for my home?

Short answer: Maybe. Long answer: There may be municipal restrictions limiting the height of the tower required for a wind turbine. Your site may also be less than ideal for a wind turbine – lots of trees, buildings, or other factors that will cause turbulence in the air.

Is a wind turbine right for my home?

We no longer recommend wind turbines for residential applications. This is for a wide range of reasons, including stability of manufacturers, availability of parts for service, regular maintenance costs, and installation costs.

Generally speaking, larger wind turbines (such as those that were part of Nova Scotia’s discontinued COMFIT program) are a great idea. Small wind turbines, on the other hand, can be extraordinarily difficult and each potential project needs to be very carefully examined. Read more about our opinions on our Wind page.
